Steel Grit Media
Steel grit blasting is the most commonly used process for cleaning and removing rust from metal surfaces. The grade or size of the grit is what determines the ultimate finish. Steel grit is a cast steel angular grit that’s produced by crushing specially heat-treated oversize shot pellets.
At All Blast and Paint, we use a GL 40 steel grit (approx. 0.5mm), which is harder than the GP steel grit. This is suited to heavy descaling and surface prep work. This cleans surfaces rapidly and provides a clean finish for all surfaces. Talk to us today. We'll help you determine the best-suited application and finish for you.
Crushed Glass Media
Made from 100% recycled materials, crushed glass media allows for aggressive surface profiling, which removes tough coatings such as paint, epoxy, alkyds, polyurea, vinyl, coal tar and elastomers. Because crushed glass grit is much lighter in weight than many slags, this allows increased consumption efficiency and production time – up to 30-50% less glass grit used.
All abrasive blasting work is completed to the Australian Standard. If you’re not sure what type of blasting is best suited to your surface, talk to us today. We're happy to recommend a solution based on your needs.
FAQ
What is abrasive blasting used for?
Abrasive blasting removes rust, paint, corrosion and other surface build-up from metal and concrete. It’s a crucial step before coating or repainting, as it creates a clean, textured surface that allows paint or protective coatings to bond properly.

This process improves finish quality, prevents premature wear and extends the life of machinery, structures and equipment.
What materials can be blasted safely?
Most metals, including steel and aluminium, can be blasted effectively using the correct media and pressure settings. Surfaces like concrete can also be treated safely.
The blasting media is chosen to suit the material’s strength and condition, ensuring a clean result without damage. Selecting the right technique and material combination is essential for precision and protection.
Why is surface preparation important before painting?
Without proper surface preparation, coatings won’t adhere correctly and can fail prematurely. Abrasive blasting eliminates contaminants like rust, oil and old paint that weaken the bond between the coating and the substrate.
A properly prepared surface ensures smoother application, stronger adhesion and greater resistance to wear, corrosion and harsh environments.
